Marco Island police introduce new boat to enforce waterway codes and monitor water quality

Marco Island police have deployed a new $50,000 code enforcement boat to patrol waterways and canals, focusing on water quality and addressing code-related issues such as dock maintenance. “This is the first code boat out,” said Officer Ed Barrios of Marco Island Police. Barrios provided an exclusive look at the boat, explaining its primary mission is to ensure water quality. “Our main mission is water quality. Any illicit discharges or people throwing debris into the canals,” Barrios said. The boat is part of a new initiative to enforce codes in the waterways. Barrios pointed out a recent violation involving a dock that was falling apart and polluting the water. “Dilapidated as when it’s like falling into the water. See? Like this dock here,” Barrios said. The effort aims to keep Marco Island’s waters clean by preventing debris and pollutants, including landscaping and construction waste, from entering the canals. “Code enforcement is, you know, we give a notice of violation. So, it’s like a warning, like, we want to work with you just, you know, get it up to compliance level,” Barrios said. Barrios added that he will be patrolling and monitoring the waterways daily.
