LEE COUNTY, Fla. (WINK) — The School District of Lee County is taking a formal step to break a months-long standstill in teacher contract talks.
The district filed for impasse Wednesday with the Teachers Association of Lee County (TALC) after eight months of contract negotiations, five of which focused specifically on compensation.
At the center of the dispute is a $27.8 million compensation package the district says it has put forward for teacher salaries this school year.
The district says it has proposed $9.8 million in additional teacher salary funding beyond the $18 million already committed outside of bargaining for location and subject incentives, but TALC has refused to accept the remaining $3.6 million of that proposal.

"Filing for impasse is not a decision we made lightly, but our teachers should not be asked to wait any longer," said Superintendent Denise Carlin.
"The district has put forth $9.8 million in additional pay increases on the table. TALC has stood in the way of those raises by refusing to accept the remaining $3.6 million of our proposal or offer a viable counterproposal," Carlin said. "We cannot continue negotiating against ourselves while teachers wait for money the district is prepared to provide."
Carlin also pointed to results from the $18 million incentive program, saying Lee County schools are 99.9% staffed with certified teachers and students just produced their best results in a decade.
According to data from the Florida Educational Negotiators, the district ranked second in average teacher pay among Florida's 10 largest districts for the 2025-2026 school year.
The district says it remains open to negotiation throughout the impasse process but will not allow talks to stall indefinitely while teachers wait for pay increases it says are ready to be delivered.
