Demolition underway at Fort Myers Beach Pier as pile-driving phase set to begin

Lee County crews are continuing work on the reconstruction of the Fort Myers Beach Pier, with demolition activities underway and pile-driving operations set to begin. During demolition, beachgoers may experience brief periods of vibration as existing piles are removed. According to Lee County, once demolition is complete, the project will move into the pile-driving phase, which includes installing concrete piles. A 150-foot safety perimeter will be established around the work area each morning and removed at the end of each workday. The public is urged to remain aware of restricted areas, follow posted signage, and maintain a safe distance from construction operations. Vibratory hammers will be used to set templates for pile installation, causing noticeable vibrations near the work area. These vibrations will occur intermittently as template piles are driven into the ground. After the templates are set, a drill will remove sand before concrete piles are placed into position. A diesel hammer will then drive the concrete piles into the ground, forming the foundation for the new pier. This work is expected to occur for several hours each day, with brief pauses as crews move between piles or analyze results. Pile driving will produce loud, repetitive impacts each time the hammer strikes a pile. Crews anticipate driving approximately three piles per day, though the rate may vary depending on field conditions and construction progress. A total of 108 piles are required for the project. Work will begin on the landside and progress westward toward the end of the pier. The public is encouraged to maintain a safe distance from the construction area and use hearing protection if the noise becomes uncomfortable, Lee County said. As concrete piles are delivered to the worksite, motorists on Estero Boulevard may experience brief, intermittent delays while crews safely direct large delivery trucks into the construction area. Flaggers will be on-site to guide motorists and pedestrians. Lee County said it appreciates the community's cooperation in helping crews maintain a safe construction area while the rebuilding of the pier continues.
