Gas prices rise across the Gulf Coast amid war in Iran

Drivers on the Gulf Coast are paying more than $4 per gallon for gas, with many limiting their trips to essential travel as prices continue to rise due to the ongoing conflict in Iran. "I think it's time to get us out, get gas prices back to normal, start focusing on the people here and stop worrying about what's going on all over the world," said Michael Del Pizzo filling up in Fort Myers. The conflict has caused damage to pipelines in Saudi Arabia, a major source of oil shipped to the U.S. coast, leading to price increases. Mark Jenkins of AAA explained the impact on gas prices. "Gas prices have remained elevated since this conflict with Iran began. Just in the past couple of weeks, we've seen gas prices go back up to levels we haven't seen really since last May," Jenkins said. He added, "The average cost to fill an average-sized tank of gas is about $65. Now it's $20 more than what people were paying back in February before this conflict began." Prices jumped more than 50 cents this week, marking a spike not seen in months. Some drivers, like Joe Dix, are trying to find perspective. "Personally, I feel that I'm contributing... if it's a little bit more expensive or double." Others, like Trish Harpster, are changing their driving habits to save money. "You're going to get more bang for your buck instead of going out making short trips multiple times a week. So, I'm trying to plan my trips so that I go out one time and I hit the places I need to go on one day versus going out multiple days," Harpster said. Jenkins also explained why Florida's gas prices can adjust faster than other states. "They basically take all that fuel, they put it on ships, and then they sail into Florida. So, sometimes, you know, our prices will adjust faster than other states. There's a lot of variables that go into the different pricing," he said. Despite the rising costs, drivers like Leo Nail are determined to keep moving forward. "We need to make these no matter what we can do, no matter what's going on. Rather, they give the gas prices are going to be $2. Phenomenal. If they're $5, is what it is, we still have to go on the road," Nail said.
